Diabetes or diabetes mellitus, or DM or in the Indonesian language diabetes is a disease that occurs due to disruption of the metabolism of blood sugar (glucose) in the person's body. Blood sugar (glucose) is actually very important for health because it is a source of energy for muscles and tissues. But in people with diabetes will have a very high sugar levels in their blood after eating and will be very low when you're fasting.
Common symptoms of diabetes include:
frequent urination
frequent thirst
often feel very hungry
weight decreased drastically
often experience fatigue
if they get injured, it is difficult to recover
frequent infections such as gum infections, skin, vaginal infections or bladder infections.
To understand more about diabetes, you need to know how glucose is processed in the body normally. Glucose is the main energy source for the body. Glucose is the body obtained from the food we eat and is produced in the liver. When digested food is absorbed sugars into the bloodstream with the help of insulin (a hormone that regulates carbohydrate metabolism). The hormone insulin is produced in the pancreas.
In this process the liver acts as a storage warehouse and processing center. For example, when you do not eat for some time, the liver releases stored glucose to maintain glucose levels remain normal.
In a healthy person is a normal blood sugar content; fasting blood sugar, normal <110 mg / dl. Whereas 2 hours after eating, normal <200 mg / dl.
There are several types of diabetes:
1. Type 1 Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus type 1, juvenile diabetes (childhood-onset diabetes, juvenile diabetes, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, IDDM) is diabetes that occurs due to the reduced ratio of insulin in the blood circulation due to the loss of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. IDDM can be suffered by children and adults.
Until now IDDM can not be prevented and can not be cured, even with diet and by exercise. Most people with type 1 diabetes have health and good weight when the disease began to suffered. In addition, the sensitivity and response to insulin is generally normal in this type of diabetes, especially in the early stages.
Currently, type 1 diabetes can only be treated with insulin, with careful monitoring of blood glucose levels through blood testing monitors.
2. Diabetes Type 2
Diabetes mellitus type 2 (adult-onset diabetes, obesity-related diabetes, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, NIDDM) is a type of diabetes mellitus that occurs is not caused by the ratio of insulin in the blood circulation, but is a metabolic disorder caused by mutations in many genes and disruption of insulin secretion, and cell resistance to insulin.
Prevention of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is not preventable. However, in type 2 diabetes can be prevented by adopting healthy lifestyle such as:
Eat healthy foods, low calorie and low fat.
Allowing myself to exercise.
Maintain your ideal weight.
