Smoking Dangers Threatening Youths



Endless discussions about the dangers of smoking, both in the official forums and chat daily. But also an endless number of smokers in Indonesia and in the world. Despite the fact they were smokers already know the dangers of smoking but they still smoke in order to meet his inner satisfaction.

Health Minister in his speech said, "Among the Indonesian population aged above 15 years, 35 percent are smokers. And of the 10 boys over the age of 15, 6 to 7 people of whom smoke ".

Based on data Riskesdas 2010, the prevalence of people aged 15 years and over who smoked per day reached 28.2 percent nationally. While based on the age of first smoking nationally, the age group 15-19 years ranked with the highest prevalence reached 43.3 percent, followed by 10-14 years age group which reached 17.5 percent.

According to Endang, another situation is more alarming is that there are 85.4 percent of active smokers smoke at home with family members, so it can adversely impact the health of other family members, especially the children.

"So, children exposed to secondhand smoke or passive smoking. These children will experience health problems such as lung growth is slow, prone to bronchitis, ear infections and so forth, "he said.

Endang also stated that the average household expenditure tumah poor families to buy cigarettes far above the average expenditure for food ingredients such as proteins, vegetables or the other.

"So if people have money, first purchased the cigarettes. Of course in addition to, not good for himself, his family too, "he said.

She added, more than 43 million Indonesian children living at home with smokers and are exposed to secondhand smoke or passive smoking. Amounting to 37.3 percent of students reported smoking used, and 3 out of 10 students the first time smoking at age below 10 years.

This condition, according to Endang, because children and young people have been overwhelmed by the invitation of smoking by advertising, promotion and sponsorship is very intense. As a comparison reveals Endang, tobacco advertising restrictions in other countries has been curtailed. There's even a totally banned, that is, there should be absolutely no advertising or sponsorship.

"Because there is no place in other countries, then the cigarette ads that went into Indonesia," he explained.

Endang hope, that the younger generation to be smart, and see that smoking is not cool. "What is cool is not aware that smoking is unhealthy and shows that the younger generation is responsible for their own health," he said.

When disingung about the extent of government efforts to control health problems caused by tobacco, Endang admitted that it had made various efforts including by developing a variety of tobacco control regulations, as contained in the Health Act No. 36 of 2009.

"Then we also we are putting together the draft Government Regulation (RPP) on securing material containing addictive substances in the form of tobacco products for health. Hopefully these lesson plans can be quickly completed a Government Regulation (PP), "he concluded.
